A hand-carved oak sculpture by Al Schofield
Out of this World
After completing this unusual sculpture, I was reminded of the Alan Watts quote, “We do not ‘come into’ this world – we come out of it, like leaves from a tree”. Isn’t that a fantastic thing to say?
Watts’ words weren’t inspirational in how the sculpture formed, but I was aware of them, which later became apparent in the naming of the piece.
The wood is from a magnificent, age-old oak which stood in the grounds of the Domaine de Villechaise, La Charente. The tree sadly had to be felled as its’ 2 metre + trunk was unstable and hollow up to about three metres high.
